PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of confirming and reading the contents of a transparent original at a low cost without enlarging a fitting space. SOLUTION: The image reader has a transparent platen with an original placing surface having the placed original, a carriage fitted on the reverse side to the original placing surface while holding the platen and a first light source being fitted on the side of the original placing surface while holding the platen and illuminating the transparent original placed on the platen. The image reader further has an image sensor outputting an image signal displaying the transparent original by converting a light radiated from the first light source and transmitted through the transparent original in a photoelectric manner, and a surface light source being loaded on the carriage and radiating the light having a uniform surface towards the platen. The image reader further has a carrying section stopping the carriage at a place where the surface light source illuminates the original placing surface as the carrying section carrying the carriage parallel with the platen.
