PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 9-substituted fluorene derivative having no electron-donating groups on the 3 and 6 positions of the fluorene skeleton. SOLUTION: The 9-substituted fluorene derivative is represented by the formula(1) with the carbon atom on the 9-position of fluorene substituted by an electrically positive element. In the formula(1), E is a substituent-bound boron atom or group 14 element; and X is a halogen atom except fluorine atom. This 9-substituted fluorene derivative can be easily converted to aπ-electron-based compound with X substituted with an aryl group or the like by cross coupling reaction or the like with an aryltin compound or acetylene compound in the presence of a Pd catalyst. Such aπ-electron-based compound is suitable as an electron transport material because of having no electron-donating group, being useful as a light-emitting material as well.
