PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk playback apparatus, a display method, a program, and a recording medium, which enable the recognizability of a display state of a start menu to be enhanced to thereby prevent the occurrence of malfunction even when a user changes the start menu of the playback apparatus. SOLUTION: The optical disk playback apparatus 20 includes: a start menu data memory 4 composed of a rewritable memory for storing optional start menu data associated with an image displayed at starting or in a standby state; a start display data memory 12 for storing start display data associated with the display indicating a start or standby state; and a video mixer 13 for synthesizing the start menu data stored in the start menu data memory 4 with the start display data stored in the start display data memory 12 in the start or standby.
