PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin composition for a friction material from which a binder for the friction material excellent in mechanical strength, thermal resistance and abrasion resistance is obtainable. SOLUTION: This phenol resin composition for the friction material comprises a novolak type phenol resin and a fibrous inorganic filler having 10-100 nm average diameter and 5 or larger aspect ratio, where the content of the fibrous inorganic filler is preferably 1-50 pts.wt. to 100 pts.wt. of the novolak type phenol resin, and further preferably the fibrous inorganic filler is one selected from among silica, zeolite, alumina, titania and potassium titanate or a mixture thereof.
