PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for developing a third order nonlinear optical function having large optical nonlinearity, high speed responsiveness and excellent durability and to provide a nonlinear optical element and a nonlinear optical device. SOLUTION: A nonlinear optical member containing a specified croconium coloring matter monomer as a nonlinear optical material and containing at least a kind of energy acceptor selected from a croconium coloring matter dimer, an assembly of the croconium coloring matter, and another quencher, is made to develop the third order nonlinear optical function by using a light source of a wavelength resonating with the croconium coloring matter monomer, and the development of a component slow in nonlinear optical response is suppressed by quenching by the energy transfer from the excited croconium coloring matter monomer to the energy acceptor.
