PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic system and method capable of enhancing efficiency of a medium head, by maintaining compression of the medium head in a chromatography column. SOLUTION: An adjustment assembly 112 is engaged slidably with an inside of one end part of a column 110 to be movable along a major axis of the column 110. When the column 110 is actively processing, force acting therein is expressed as a sum of compression and force of a fluid under processing. The total of the forces and fluid pressure are monitored respectively using a load cell 180 and a pressure sensor 190. Then, compression force acting on the medium head 120 is calculated based on measured values thereof, and is compared with the desirable or preferable optimum value. Then, a position of the adjustment assembly 112 is corrected in response to the measured compression force in order to maintain a fixed compression of the medium head 120.
