PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head which can cope with promoting high recording density suppressing the occurrence of dielectric breakdown. SOLUTION: In a reproducing head part 20, a first part 181 consisting of one kind or two kinds or more out of tungstic oxide, titanium oxide, tin oxide, and strontium oxide and having specific resistance of 10 kΩcm or less is provided between an upper shield layer 19 and a MR element and between a pair of electrode layers 17L, 17R. The first part 181 passes a minute current, dielectric breakdown of an upper part gap layer 18 is prevented by reducing potential difference between the upper shield layer 19 and the MR element 15 and between the pair of electrode layers 17L, 17R. On the other hand, since the first part 18 has a sufficiently higher resistance than the MR element 15 in a X axis direction, shunt of a sense current can be suppressed sufficiently. Therefore, narrowing of the gap length GL is realized by thinning the upper gap layer 18, and the apparatus can cope with improvement of line recording density. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
