PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for machine structure use having excellent hot forgeability, cold forgeability and rolling fatigue properties. SOLUTION: The steel for machine structure use has a composition comprising 0.35 to 0.55% C, 0.05 to 1.0% Si, 0.4 to 1.5% Mn,≤0.030% P, 0.005 to 0.050% S, 0 to 0.20% Cu, 0 to 0.20% Ni, 0 to 2.0% Cr, 0 to 1.0% Mo, 0 to 0.20% V, 0 to 0.10% Ti, 0 to 0.0050% B, 0.005 to 0.050% Al, 0.0005 to <0.0050% rare earth metals and≤0.0020% O (oxygen), and the balance Fe with impurities, and in which Nd accounts for≥60% of the rare earth metals.
