In a motor vehicle having a forwardly disposed power unit with front wheel drive, e.g. as described in Specification 976,014, there is provided a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism which is located within a re-entrant portion of the casing of the power unit. The power unit may be longitudinally disposed, Figs. 1 and 4, and the rack 17 accommodated in a re-entrant portion 22 of the bottom wall of the power unit casing, adjacent the sump 23. Alternatively, the power unit may be transversely disposed, Figs. 6, 8 and 10, and the rack-and-pinion mechanism may comprise a rack 37 connected by a link 38 to the steering linkage 36, 19, 20 and 21, the rack 37 and rod 36 being disposed in a re-entrant portion 35 between the sump 39 and engine casing.
