PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording and reproducing device in which yield is improved, no difficulty occurs in recording and reproducing even though fault is generated in optical parts related to the recording and reproducing, and reliability is made high. SOLUTION: The feature of the hologram recording and reproducing device is to have: a referring light emission section which irradiates a hologram recording medium with referring light; a spatial modulating section which generates information light that is modulated using spatial information corresponding to the page data to be written into the medium; an information light emission section which emits the information light onto the same region of the region that is being irradiated with the referring light; a light detecting section which receives reproducing light being generated by emitting the referring light onto the medium, a known data storage section which beforehand stores known page data; a fault investigation section which reads the known page data written on the medium after the known page data are written into the medium using the spatial information corresponding to the known page data, so as to investigate the fault position of the light detecting section or the like; and a reproduction control section which restores and reproduces the fault position data included in the reproducing light using the detected fault position information.
