PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To materialize accurate and short-time detection of operation abnormality of a thermostat on the basis of value relating to pressure as compared with a conventional one by detecting pressure irrelevant to temperature in cooling water. SOLUTION: The abnormality detecting device contains a pressure sensor 12 which is provided to passages (a communication passage 40, water jacket 48 or the like) and which detects pressure of cooling water 36, a cooling water circulation means (an electric pump 44 or the like) for circulating the cooling water 36 through the passages and an abnormality detection means (ECU 38 or the like) for detecting operation abnormality of a thermostat 42 on the basis of a value relating to pressure detected by the pressure sensor 12. Since estimation of temperature is not executed, no standby is required. As a result, abnormality can be accurately and shortly detected as compared with a conventional one.
