In a process for the preparation of a dispersion in organic liquid of addition polymer in which the polymer particles are stabilized in disperse form by a block or graft copolymer of which one constituent is compatible with, and is co-precipitated with, the polymer and another constituent is solvated by the organic liquid and stabilizes the polymer dispersion, a modifier is incorporated in the disperse polymer particles by co-precipitating in the organic liquid the polymer and a modifier insoluble in the organic liquid. Modifiers specified are dimethyl phthalate, benzoic acid-terminated glycol sebacate, lauric acid-terminated glycol adipate, lauric acid-modified glyceryl phthalate, epoxy resins, aminoplasts, alkylnaphthalenes, halonaphthalene, halophenyls and a halo-paraffin wax. In the examples dispersions of polymers are prepared by polymerizing the following mixtures: (1-4) methyl methacrylate, degraded rubber, benzoyl peroxide, white spirit and either dimethyl phthalate or a lauric acid-terminated polypropylene glycol adipate; (5) styrene, polyacrylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, ethanol and chlorinated paraffin wax; (6) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, methacrylic acid, degraded rubber, petroleum ether and the penta-ethyl ether of hexamethylol melamine; and (7) methyl methacrylate, beta-ethoxyethyl methacrylate, glycol monomethacrylate, benzoyl peroxide, degraded rubber, white spirit petroleum ether and a soft resinous condensation product of epichlorohydrin and diphenylol propane. Films cast from the products of (6) and (7) become solvent-resistant on baking at 150 DEG C. Specifications 893,429 and 941,305 are referred to.
