PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a projection type video display device having high contrast, little black unevenness and excellent in black display performance. SOLUTION: In the case of fixing an optical compensation element for compensating an optical phase difference caused by the liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal display element used in the projection type video display device in the projection type video display device, the optical compensation element is fixed after its relative position to the liquid crystal display element is adjusted by an external adjusting device. Thus, the projection type video display device excellent in the black display performance is provided. By setting the shape of the effective range of the optical compensation element not to a general rectangle but to a polygon, the projection type video display device is miniaturized.
