1-Hydroxy-4-aminoanthraquinones having an aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic mercapto group in 2-position are made by reacting a 1-hydroxy-4-nitroanthraquinone, which may have a further hydroxy group in one a -position or a further hydroxy group and a nitro group in the other a -positions but which is unsubstituted in the 2-position, with an aromatic, aliphatic or araliphatic mercaptan, one reaction component being present as an alkali-metal salt, and then reducing any incompletely reduced nitro groups to amino. The invention further comprises 1 - hydroxy - 2 - aralkylmercapto - 4 - aminoanthraquinones. Anthraquinones which may be used in the process are 1-hydroxy-4-nitro-, 1:8-dihydroxy-4:5-dinitro-, 1:5-dihydroxy - 4:8 - dinitro-and 1:4:5 - trihydroxy-8-nitroanthraquinones and mercaptans specified are 2 - mercaptoethanol, 2 - diethylamino-ethyl mercaptan, butyl mercaptan, dodecyl mercaptan, thioglycerol, benzyl mercaptan, thiophenol, the tert.-butyl thiophenols, thiocresols and chlorothiophenols. Two mercapto groups may be introduced into an appropriately substituted anthraquinone. The dyes dye and print cellulose triacetate, polyamide and polyester materials in red, blue and grey shades. |
