<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust valve control method and an exhaust valve control device for a diesel engine, in which EGR gas can be disposed in a layer at an upper part in a cylinder without being mixed with intake, or without being diffused in the cylinder, so that knocking can be efficiently restricted with less EGR gas quantity (EGR ratio) than in conventional devices. <P>SOLUTION: This exhaust valve control method for a diesel engine 6 is for changing between a normal combustion mode and a premix combustion mode in accordance with driving states. In the normal combustion mode, an exhaust valve 9 is opened only in an exhaust stroke.
