PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single-ended arc discharge vessel which raises lamp operation temperature, permits a long arc gap and is completed in size and operation characteristics. SOLUTION: The single-ended arc discharge vessel has U-shaped arc discharge chamber 12 containing metal halide salt mixture, and two electrodes 14 adjacent to each other in an identical end portion of an envelope 10, wherein each of the electrodes has arc discharge forming portion 18 existing in a leg portion of the U-shaped arc discharge chamber and the arc discharge between the end portions is U-shape.
