MULTICAST PACKET PROCESSING APPARATUS AND METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize delay in the processing time of a forwarding part and a packet transmitting part by combining internal processing of a multicast packet processing unit into a forwarding unit and a packet duplication unit.

SOLUTION: A multicast packet processor is constituted by providing a packet receiving unit 110 adapted to receive packets; a forwarding unit 120 having a unicast forwarder for forwarding a packet when the packet is a unicast packet and a multicast forwarder 122 for multicasting a packet when the received packet is a multicast packet; a packet duplication unit 140 for duplicating the multicast packet output from the multicast forwarder 128 and converting them into unicast packets, a packet distributing unit 140 for reintroducing the packets converted into unicast packets to the forwarding unit; and a scheduler for port-scheduling and dequeuing packets output via the forwarding unit.
