PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform accurate shading correction while solving the problem that it is difficult to install a white reference member about shading correction at a fixed read means side in the case of reading both sides. SOLUTION: This image reader has a first read means having a movable read opening for reading the first side of an original, a fixed second read means for reading the second side of the original, a second white reference member arranged at a reading position of the second read means to convey an original and also to be read by the second read means in a state with no original existing, and a second shading correction means for generating whiteness correction data from a difference in pixels with each other at the same position between initial second whiteness reference member read data obtained by reading the second white reference member and white reference original data obtained by reading a white reference original of a material having whiteness equivalent to that of a first white reference member by the second read means and using the whiteness correction data to generate second shading correction data.
