PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of smooth and secure focusing operation even at night by obtaining subject distance information, such as panning or tilting, corresponding to imaging direction. SOLUTION: When an operation is carried out under a low illuminance, whether or not an AF (automatic focusing) has been stopped due to the low illuminance is checked (S201). If the AF has been stopped due to the low illuminance, the operation is ended as it is. If the AF has not been stopped due to the low illuminance, luminance is checked (S202). If the luminance is above a predetermined value, the operation is ended. If the luminance is below the predetermined value, a focused state is checked (S203), and a focusable state is also checked (S203). If the state is focusable, the operation is ended. If it is not focusable, a panning angle/tilting angle is used to detect the area in the imaging direction at the angle (S204). The subject distance information of the area is read from a memory (S205). Thereafter, a focus lens is moved to a subject distance stored according to the position of a zoom lens (S206).
