<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display unit and an image forming unit having the display unit capable of returning from a power saving mode to a normal mode, and at the same time shifting to a function mode desired by a user. <P>SOLUTION: In a copying machine 1 having the image forming unit with the display unit, power supply to a liquid crystal display 36 is suspended at the time of a power saving state, and there is a shift to a detection standby state in which only the coordinate value is detected on the X direction of a touch panel 35. At the time of the above power saving state, when the user selects and touches an area for shifting to the desired function mode from among operation mode selection areas 38 on the touch panel 35, power supply to the liquid crystal display 36 is resumed to return to the normal state from the power saving state.
