[PROBLEMS] This invention provides a process for producing gas, which is low in electrode cost and can cause a photoelectric chemical reaction at a low applied voltage, a process for producing acidic water and alkaline water, and an apparatus for producing the same. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] An anode and a cathode, which are immersed in an aqueous solution and are electrically connected to each other, are provided. The aqueous solution is subjected to a redox reaction to produce hydrogen gas from the cathode side, or to produce acidic water from the anode while producing alkaline water from the cathode. At least one of the anode and the cathode is a nitride semiconductor photocatalyst represented by Al<SUB>y</SUB>Ga<SUB>1-x-y</SUB>In<SUB>x</SUB>N, wherein x-y = 0.45, 0 = x = 1, and 0 = y = 1, which applies a voltage across the anode and the cathode.
