A document reading device is disclosed which allows an original document to be read without an operator actuating a start key. If a series of operations are performed, such as loading an original document into a sheet feeding tray after the lapse of a time period "a" from the reading of a previous original document, removing the original document within a predetermined time period "b" after the loading, loading the original document into the sheet feeding tray again within the predetermined time period "b", and causing a document sensor to detect whether the loading of the original document is for a time period that exceeds a predetermined time "c", a request to begin reading the original document will be issued without an operator actuating the start key.
