PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display quality by forming projected bodies on one substrate between substrates and interposing an alignment film on the contact part of the projected bodies with the other substrate, in such a manner that the alignment film has the same initial alignment direction as that of an alignment film formed on each substrate. SOLUTION: A spacer 10 is formed on the upper face of a flattening film 8 as overlapped at almost the center of the region, where a capacitive element Cadd is formed. The spacer 10 consists of a projected body formed by photolithographic techniques, for example, from a synthetic resin film applied on the upper face of the flattening film 8. Alignment films 7, 11 which determine the initial alignment direction of a liquid crystal are formed on the upper face of a protective film PAS formed on the surface of a transparent substrate 1. Synthetic resin films are used as the material of the alignment films 7, 11, and the film surfaces to be in contact with the liquid crystal are subjected to rubbing treatment. The direction of the rubbing treatment is controlled to coincide with the initial alignment direction of the liquid crystal, and each of the alignment film 7 in a TFT substrate 1A side and the alignment film 11 in the filter substrate 1B side is subjected to rubbing treatment in the same direction. |
