A display element (16') for visual display of the state of a device has a light-guide (18), a retention element (38) and a sealing element (34) which can be inserted on the outer periphery of the light-guide (18). The light-guide is fabricated from a light-conducting material and has a length suitable for light from a light-emitting component (28) to be conducted to the outer face of the housing (12), and the retention element (38) is designed so that the light guide can be taken through the retention element and rigidly fixed in place.
