<p>The upper blank of the moccasin is placed on a form and the edge portion which is to be joined to the plug portion is shortened along its entire length to match the shape and length of the edge of the plug, then the plug is permanently joined to the upper. As described the upper blank is shortened by means of a draw string attached to the blank, e.g. by edge stitching, or by a lock stitch in which the draw string constitutes the bobbin thread. Alternatively the needle thread may act as the draw string and the bobbin provide guide thread loops. The draw string is held in tightened condition by a clip, staples, studs, knots, or a plastic cement. The blank may be of leather and may be mulled before being placed on the form and then set by drying. The skived edges of the blank and plug are then joined together by cement with or without stitching. The shoe is then mulled, force lasted, and force dried. The draw string may be removed, or left as a decorative seam. The machine for producing the lock stitch to guide the draw string may have a dull blade attached to the needle bar to form a series of regularly spaced indentations in the upper to facilitate shortening when the draw string is pulled.</p> |
