PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a coat with a superior oxidation resistance under a high temperature and superior toughness. SOLUTION: This surface-coated cutting tool includes a first coat formed by a physical vapor deposition method and a second coat formed by the physical vapor deposition method; the first coat is positioned between a base material and the second coat, constituted ofα-aluminum oxide, and has a residual stress of less than 0.2 GPa; and the second coat is constituted of at least one layer of chemical compound which is composed of at least one type of element selected from a group comprising elements of Group IVa of the periodic table, elements of Group Va, elements of Group VIa, Al and Si, and at least one type of element selected from a group comprising carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and boron, and has a compressive residual stress.
