PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing strip for electroslag welding suitable for manufacturing a BOX pillar of an internal diaphragm type. SOLUTION: In the backing strip for electroslag welding, a portion coming into contact with a molten metal is formed of a ceramic part 2, and the outer side is formed of a steel-made part 3 so as to be temporarily welded to a skin plate and an internal diaphragm. The steel-made part is an L-shape steel, and the ceramic part is mounted on the inner surface side of the L-shaped steel so as to form a rectangular section with two pieces thereof formed of a long piece and a short piece of the L-shaped steel. The rectangular section has a cutout in a part of the ceramic part so that the weld metal is elliptical in shape. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
