A half bearing shell 7 with an inner antifriction lining is formed from a blank 1 by a process of bending and rolling between rolls 3 and 4. The strip is fed at an angle α to the plane 6 of the rolls by a guide 2, is curved at A, and reduced slightly in thickness at B. The reduction is 0À5-1%, and the angle α between 10‹ and 30‹. The strip 1 can be gripped at its leading end by a radially retractable claw 8, Fig. 2, a corresponding recess 9 being provided in the roll 4, or by a pair of adjustable lateral claws which grip each edge of the strip and are able to pass through the roll gap. The bearing can be formed with a lug at its trailing end for locating the bearing in a recess in its housing, the lug being formed by a knife on roll 3 which displaces part of the bearing into a corresponding recess in the roll 4. The slightly higher specific loading of the rolls on the leading and trailing ends of the bearing, owing to the smaller volume of the material within the pass, creates a marginally greater reduction at the ends leading to a desirable oval bore. A slight amount of machining on the ends of the bearing is normally all that is required to finish the bearing. |
