PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimode radiotelephone, and a method of operation, in which the user velocity is taken into account in automatic selection of telephone system. SOLUTION: A radiotelephone (200) is operable in a cordless telephone system or in a cellular telephone system. The telephone (200) incorporates circuit elements for to detecting user velocity so that when the user moves more quickly, the telephone automatically transfers from a cordless mode which is the preferred mode, to a cellular mode.
