PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a printhead and an image receiving member moving means of a scanning type bidirectional printing system to make a nearly equal time interval respective adhesion time intervals of image points that overlap each other at each position of an image receiving member in the sub-scanning direction in the case of operation in a plurality of printing stage modes. SOLUTION: The printer with at least one bidirectional scanning type printhead is disclosed for image printing to the image receiving member by a plurality of crossings. After each crossing, the image receiving member is moved over a predetermined movement direction in the sub-scanning direction to the printhead. For every crossing of the printhead, an active part of the printhead is selected while a movement step between the crossing and the successive crossing is taken into account. Substantially at each position of the image receiving member, a crossing direction of the printhead is made equal at every first exposure to the active part of the crossing printhead.
