<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color developing agent which has high sensitivity, excellent shelf stability of a recording image, especially excellent humidity resistance at a high temperature/a high humidity, and is almost free from the generation of a texture fog, and a recording material, especially a thermal recording material using this color developing agent. <P>SOLUTION: This thermal recording color developing agent contains a phenol 3 nuclide (B) which is a phenol 3 nuclide (A), as represented by formula (1), having (a) an OH group attached to at least one of the 4- or 4'- position of each of right/left aromatic rings and (b) at least one, as hydrogen, of the substituting groups, adjacent to at least one OH group attached to the right/left aromatic rings as a substituent, and a specific fluoran compound. Besides, this color developing agent has high sensitivity, high temperature/high humidity resistance and is almost free from the generation of a texture fog.
