PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lighting device of a discharge lamp capable of lighting stably, without causing generation of flickering of light throughout all the period from the start of lighting till reaching regular lighting of a high luminance discharge lamp. SOLUTION: A lighting frequency determination circuit 6 which specifies a stable lighting frequency band corresponding to a voltage detected by a lamp voltage detection circuit 4 by reference to a relationship between a lamp voltage stored in the memory 2 and a stable lighting frequency band is installed, and the HID lamp 1 is lighted by the lighting frequency in the range of the stable lighting frequency band specified by the lighting frequency determination circuit 6 from the start of lighting till reaching the regular lighting of the HID lamp 1.
