<p>A metal complex compound represented by general formula (1). There is also provided an organic electroluminescent element which has high luminescence efficiency and a prolonged service life. The organic electroluminescent element comprises an organic thin film layer having a single or multilayer structure including at least a luminescent layer held between a pair of electrodes, wherein at least one layer in the organic thin film layer contains the above metal complex compound. (L<SUB>1</SUB>)<SUB>m</SUB>M(L<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>n</SUB> (1) wherein M represents Ir, Pt, and Rh; L<SUB>1</SUB> and L<SUB>2</SUB> represent mutually different bidentate ligands; (L<SUB>1</SUB>)<SUB>m</SUB>M as a partial structure is represented by general formula (2) and M(L<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>n</SUB> as a partial structure is represented by general formula (3); and m and n are an integer of 1 or 2, provided that m + n is an integer of 2 or 3. (2) wherein ring A1 represents an aromatic heterocyclic ring group; and ring B1 represents an aryl group, provided that the ring A1 and the ring B1 are covalently bonded to each other through Z which represents a single bond or the like. (3) wherein R<SUB>1</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB>' and R<SUB>3</SUB> each independently represent an alkyl group or the like; R<SUB>1</SUB> and R<SUB>2</SUB>, R<SUB>1</SUB> and R<SUB>2</SUB>', R<SUB>2</SUB> and R<SUB>2</SUB>', R<SUB>2</SUB> and R<SUB>3</SUB>, and R<SUB>2</SUB>' and R<SUB>3</SUB> may combine with each other to form a cyclic structure; and Y represents a group represented by O or S.</p> |
