<p>A limited slip differential or transfer case comprises a limited slip friction clutch 24 which is activated by a hydraulic piston 62 so as to connect an input, e.g. differential case 16, to outputs such as axle shafts 20a, 20b. The piston is supplied with fluid from an accumulator 50 that is in communication with a pump 30 which is connected to the input 16 or outputs 20a, 20b by an auxiliary clutch, e.g. electromagnetic clutch 40. An electronic control unit 70 receives control inputs 72 such as vehicle speed, wheel speed difference, yaw rate, vehicle lateral acceleration etc which are used to control the electromagnetic clutch 40 and thereby the pump 30. So as to not interfere with, for example, yaw stability control it may be necessary to disable the limited slip clutch 24, this is accomplished by the disengaging the pump 30 via the electromagnetic clutch 40 from the input 16 or outputs 20a, 20 so that the pump 30 no longer supplies fluid to the piston 62. The pump 30 is also turned off by the electromagnetic clutch 40 when a predetermined pressure is reached in the accumulator.</p> |
