PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a control method for an externally controlled fan clutch that can assure the function of an engine cooling system. SOLUTION: In a method of controlling opening/closing of a valve member operated by an electromagnet, by PID control based on radiator cooling liquid temperature, fan rotating speed, transmission oil temperature, vehicle speed, engine rotating speed, compressor pressure of an air conditioner and at least one signal out of ON and OFF signals of the air conditioner, when the malfunction of a fan rotating speed sensor temporarily occurs, PID operation is performed based on fan rotating speed data of one scan before, and a control signal is computed to stabilize fan rotation, and when a fan rotating speed sensor system fails, PID operation is performed with the fan rotating speed as zero rpm to make control output after operation always 100%, thus ensuring engine cooling performance.
