PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a permanent wave pretreating agent, an intermediate treating agent and a method for the treatment of hair, effective for preventing the damage of the hair by permanent wave treatment, giving a treated hair softness and finger combing property and capable of forming a uniform and good wave or straight hair even to a damaged hair. SOLUTION: The permanent wave pretreating agent and intermediate treating agent contain an oily component and at least one kind of imidazolinium compound expressed by general formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>is an 8-80C alkenyl or alkyl; R<SP>2</SP>is an 8-30C alkenyl or alkyl; and X<SP>-</SP>is a counter ion of imidazolinium salt).
