PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide silicon nitride powder which is excellent in hydrolyzability, emits less ammonia odors, and is low in the content of coarse grains and to provide its a manufacturing method, and a toner external additive using the silicon nitride powder. SOLUTION: The silicon nitride powder of 5 to 20mass% in oxygen content having an oxide film is treated with a surface treating agent composed of a silane coupling agent and/or silicone oil and is characterized in that the average grain size is≤2μm; the content of coarse grains of≥25μm is≤50μg/g; the degree of hydrophobing by a methanol titration method is≥65%; and the amount of elution of ammonium ions after extraction by heating for 15 hours at 80°C is <10 g per 1 g of the silicon nitride powder, The method for manufacturing the same and the toner external additive composed of the silicon nitride powder are provided.
