PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing method of a thermal transfer printer in which print speed for a recording sheet can be enhanced by reducing the dimensions of an ink ribbon at a portion not used for printing. SOLUTION: A head guide 11 in the vicinity of a thermal head 4 is arranged with a ribbon sensor 12. When a recording sheet 17 is not conveyed, the thermal head 4 is turned up and the ribbon sensor 12 is elevated and then first ribbon sensing is performed by detecting a first marker 18b. When a recording sheet 17 is conveyed between the thermal head 4 and a platen roller 3, the thermal head 4 is turned down to press the recording sheet 17 against the platen roller 3 and the ribbon sensor 12 is lowered. Subsequently, second ribbon sensing for aligning print start position of ink layers 18a of second and subsequent colors with the heating elements 4a of the thermal head 4 is performed by detecting a second marker 18c.
