PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive device of a passenger conveyor capable of improving riding comfort and formed of a less number of parts. SOLUTION: In this passenger conveyor, a step 6 for boarding passengers is locked to a step link 5 in which its upper side is formed in a forward passage formed by endlessly connecting toothed links with racks thereon to each other, extending to both sides in a main frame 1, and vertically inverting at both end parts and its lower side is formed in a return passage. A drive machine 11 in which a drive chain 16 is wrapped around a drive sprocket 14 and a driven sprocket 15 installed apart a prescribed distance from each other is interposed between steps on the forward passage side and those on the return passage side, and the drive chain 16 is tilted by a prescribed angleθto the extending direction of the step link 5 and stretched. On the drive sprocket 14 side, the drive chain 16 is engaged with the pitch line Lp part of the step link 5 on either one of the forward passage side and the return passage side, and on the driven sprocket 15 side, the drive chain 16 is engaged with the pitch line Lp part of the step link 5 on the other side to circulatingly drive a step 6.
