A magnetic lock device comprises one or more tumblers 20, 21, 24 of ferro-magnetic material and a key 18 having magnetized inserts, 20", 32", 21", 31" and 24", one for each tumbler, adapted to cause all the tumblers to move from locking to unlocking position against the attractive action of auxiliary elements 20', 21' and 24', one for each tumbler acting, in the absence of the key, to move and hold its related tumbler into locking position, such movements being effective regardless of the line and direction of movement of the tumblers to unlocking position, and including non-magnetizable material 44 between each tumbler and its related auxiliary element. As shown in which the tumblers control a barrel 16 rotatably mounted on a cylinder 15, the tumblers are manually held in a locking position by the magnetic attraction of the auxiliary elements 20', 21', 24' constituted by permanent magnets. A second set of tumblers 31, 32 and elements 31' is arranged at an angle to be first set and the key 18 is provided with corresponding inserts 31" and 32". A pin 33 extending through the key is engageable at one end 33' thereof in an external channel 35 of the cylinder, and in a notch 36 in the barrel to prevent withdrawal of the key except when the tumblers are in the position in which they are moved to the locking position as the key is withdrawn. A tumbler 40 of a magnetizable material is normally maintained in a hole 41 in the cylinder by a permanent magnet 42, but falls into a socket 43 to block movement to the barrel if a magnetic kicking device is applied to the key-hole of the lock. In alternative arrangements Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the tumblers may be permanent magnets and the elements 20', 21', &c. unmagnetized and the material 44 may be air. In a further arrangement, Fig. 10 (not shown), the elements 20', 21' &c. are afforded by a soft-iron sleeve (52), and the material 44 is a copper or brass lining 52'.
