PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer which can reduce image printing costs per sheet of a recording paper by reducing running costs of an ink ribbon. SOLUTION: The thermal transfer printer 1 is equipped with a thermal head 4, a platen roller 3 to which the thermal head 4 can turn up/down, the ink ribbon 18 drawn between the thermal head 4 and the platen roller 3, and a paper feed roller 13 which can transfer the recording paper 17. A release roller 11c which can release the ink ribbon 18 adhered to the recording paper 17 at the time of printing is disposed at the downstream side of the thermal head 4 in a transfer direction of the recording paper 17. An optical ribbon sensor 12 which can detect a detection marker corresponding to an ink face of a desired color formed on the ink ribbon 18 is set between the thermal head 4 and the release roller 11c.
