PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuator capable of preventing influence of current carrying of a coil by preventing intrusion of engine oil into the inside of an electric motor. SOLUTION: This actuator 6 is provided with a ball screw mechanism 37 stored and arranged in a housing 35 storing engine oil in its inside and the electric motor 36 arranged and fixed in a one end part of the housing to operate a variable mechanism for changing opening and closing characteristics of an intake valve by transmitting rotation of a driving shaft 36 of the electric motor to a control shaft 32. The housing and a motor casing 38 of the electric motor are arranged in an inclined manner so that a tip part side of the driving shaft is positioned below for the direction of gravity for a cylinder head 1.
