PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for positioning a V-shape portion, which method and apparatus can position a V-shape locus (a V-shape curve) at the position of an optimum edge surface, and further to provide a method for setting a layout of a lens grinding apparatus using the method and apparatus. SOLUTION: A V-shape curve coincident with the frame curve of a spectacle frame is automatically calculated by means of an arithmetic and control circuit 91 based on the data of the frame shape of the spectacle frame, the data of the edge thickness of a spectacle lens at the position corresponding to the frame shape, and the relative position of the optical center of the spectacle lens with respect to the geometrical center of the frame shape. Further, when the position of the V-shape coincident with the frame curve cannot be set, the arithmetic and control circuit 91 sets an approximate V-curve which approximately coincides with the frame curve and enters within the range of the edge thickness.
