PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device making a low pressure compression control means and a complicated sensing system unnecessary. SOLUTION: In a start device for the engine performing fuel injection and ignition in a start starting cylinder in expansion stroke at a time of re-start after engine stop and burning air fuel mixture in the cylinder to make the engine self-start by using combustion pressure, a crank shaft positioning means 3, 21, 31 forcedly positioning a crank shaft at crank angle position at which self-start of the engine by the start starting cylinder is possible.
