PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus capable of obtaining the maximum proper contrast in accordance with a variety of object brightness and various photographing scenes. SOLUTION: Low-pass and high-pass AF filters for extracting a prescribed frequency area signal from an image signal obtained by a CCD 10_41 are arranged in an AF detection circuit 10_51, and the characteristics of respective AF filters are switched in accordance with the object field brightness detected by an AE detection circuit 10_50, and a focus lens 10_1a<SB>2</SB>is driven to a focal position based on an AF evaluation value from the switched AF filter.
