An improved design of heat exchanger for heating or cooling a gas stream, e.g. for heating a coal dust transport system prior to blowing into the furnace, has a vertical cylindrical housing (10) with the gas entering near to the bottom (12) and exiting near to the top (14). A cylindrical heat exchanger element (32) is fitted between the gas connections and is surrounded by two coils (36, 38) through which the heat exchanger fluid is first ducted followed by flowing through the element. The coils have two diameters and with the loops interdigitated for maximum surface effect in the space between the heat exchanger and the outer housing. |
