The method involves corresponding a period of a periodic signal to a working period, and determining a current operating phase of four cylinders (14a-14d) of an internal-combustion engine (10). The signal is obtained from an operation value of the engine, where the value has a cylinder-specific characteristic, which depends on the operating phase. The characteristic is evaluated for determining the operating phase of the cylinders. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) an electrical storage medium for a control- and/or adjusting device of an internal combustion engine for storing a computer program to implement a method of operating an internal combustion engine (B) an internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle having a control- and/or adjusting device.
