A bed occupant monitoring and alert system comprising a plurality of sensors (22, 24, 26) to be located relative to at least one mattress (16) so as to be able to detect a patient upon the least one mattress. Each of the plurality of sensors is also for generating and receiving a signal to a control unit. The control unit is for sampling the signals as received form the plurality of sensors to determine if the patient in upon at least a portion of the at least one mattress.
