PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical type pipe joint of high reliability, capable of surely preventing occurrence of accidents such as slipping-off of a pipe and water leakage after execution of work. SOLUTION: This mechanical type pipe joint has a joint main body 1 having a socket portion 5 to which one end portion of a pipe P is inserted, a circular clamp 2 having an expandable and contractible diameter, connected with an outer end portion in the pipe shaft direction, of the socket portion of the joint main body relatively rotatably in a retained state, and externally fitted to the pipe, and a tightening bolt 14 mounted on the clamp for contracting the diameter of the clamp. A circular lock ring storage recessed groove 13 having a taper face 12 narrowed outward in the pipe shaft direction, is formed on an inner periphery of a projecting end portion 22 of the clamp 2 projecting outward from the outer end portion in the pipe shaft direction of the socket portion 5, and an expandable and contractible lock ring 4 having a bite tooth 4a on its inner periphery, is stored in the recessed groove. The diameter of the lock ring 4 is contracted, and the bite tooth 4a is allowed to bite an outer periphery of the pipe P inserted into the socket portion 5, by tightening the tightening bolt 14, and contracting the diameter of the clamp 2.
