PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing device for an elevator capable of absorbing even a large shock if the large shock is added to a terminal of a main rope suspending a car. SOLUTION: This device is provided with the main rope suspending a car of an elevator, a main rope support body 2c supporting a load added to the main rope, a rope shackle 5 to which the main rope is connected, a spring presser 6 provided on the rope shackle, a shackle spring 7 provided between the main rope support body and the spring presser to absorb a shock generated in the normal operation of the elevator, and a shock absorbing member 8 provided between the main rope support body and the spring presser to absorb such a shock as to cause a load exceeding a prescribed value to the shackle spring if the load exceeding the prescribed value is generated.
